What Kaal means

The name Kaal (काल) means time, and in this setting it is traditionally linked with adverse, challenging influences. It is generally regarded as the most inauspicious of the seven Choghadiya and is avoided for beginning important activities.

Is Kaal auspicious?

No. Kaal is considered highly unfavourable for starting new ventures or performing auspicious ceremonies. This does not imply that misfortune is inevitable - the Panchang simply recommends choosing a more favourable period when you have the flexibility to do so.

Why it is considered inauspicious

Kaal is traditionally associated with obstacles, delays, setbacks and unfavourable outcomes. For that reason the Panchang advises against major new beginnings during it whenever an alternative is available.

What can still be done

Routine daily responsibilities, essential work and emergencies should carry on as needed. Choghadiya is a time-selection guide, not a ban on doing necessary tasks.

Kaal Choghadiya vs Rahu Kala

Both are traditionally inauspicious, but they are different systems. Kaal is one of the seven repeating Choghadiya periods that recur through the day and night, while Rahu Kala is a separate daily window based on the position of Rahu. When a time falls within both, it is regarded as an especially unsuitable moment to begin important work.

A simple way to remember

Kaal = best avoided for new beginnings. When you can, postpone important activities until a more favourable Choghadiya such as Char, Labh, Shubh or Amrit.
