Frequently asked questions

What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya is a popular system of auspicious and inauspicious time slots used in western and northern India, especially before travel, purchases or starting new work. The daylight (sunrise to sunset) is split into 8 Choghadiya and the night (sunset to next sunrise) into 8 more, cycling through seven named periods - each ruled by a planet and judged good, mixed or to be avoided.

How many Choghadiya are there in a day?

Sixteen slots in all - 8 during the day and 8 at night - drawn from the seven named Choghadiya: Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Char, Udveg, Rog and Kaal. Each daytime Choghadiya is one-eighth of the day and each night one is one-eighth of the night, so they vary in length with the season.

Which Choghadiya is good for travel?

Char (the 'movable' Choghadiya, ruled by Venus) is considered especially good for travel and journeys. Amrit, Shubh and Labh are auspicious for most work, while Udveg, Rog and Kaal are generally avoided for new or important undertakings.
