The 30 Muhurtas of the Day
The Hindu day is divided into thirty muhurtas - fifteen through the daylight (sunrise to sunset) and fifteen through the night (sunset to next sunrise), each about 48 minutes. A muhurta is one of the 30 divisions of the Hindu day. The daytime (sunrise to sunset) is split into 15 equal muhurtas and the night (sunset to next sunrise) into 15 more, giving 30 in all. Each carries a presiding deity and a traditional nature, so it is judged auspicious, mixed or inauspicious for different kinds of work.
How long is a muhurta?
About 48 minutes on average - one-fifteenth of the day or of the night. Because a day and a night are rarely the same length, day-muhurtas and night-muhurtas differ in duration and are exactly equal only at the equinox; the app computes each from the real sunrise, sunset and next sunrise for your city.
What is the Abhijit muhurta?
Abhijit is the 8th daytime muhurta, centred on solar noon, and one of the most auspicious windows of the day - though it is treated as void on Wednesdays. Because it sits at midday, it lines up with the 8th of the 15 daytime muhurtas listed here.
