Mythological background

Tvashtar is the great artificer of the Vedas, whose name means 'the fashioner' or 'the carpenter', the divine craftsman who shapes and forms. He is the one who gives shape to living creatures in the womb, who forges the tools and treasures of the gods, and who fashions all manner of beautiful and skilful things. In later tradition he is closely identified with Vishvakarma, 'the maker of all', the celestial architect and engineer of the divine worlds.

Among his most famous works is the vajra, the mighty thunderbolt weapon of Indra, forged, in one account, from the bones of the sage Dadhichi. Tvashtar is also credited with crafting the cups and vessels of the gods and the shining ornaments they wear. As Vishvakarma he is said to have built the celestial cities and palaces, the chariots and the wondrous devices of the deities, the supreme designer of the cosmos.

The texts also tell of Tvashtar as a father. He is the parent of Saranyu, mother of the twins and of Yama and Yami, and of the three-headed Vishvarupa. When Indra slew Vishvarupa, Tvashtar in his grief and anger is said to have created the fearsome Vritra to avenge his son, weaving one of the great cosmic dramas of the Rigveda.

As Vishvakarma, Tvashtar is widely worshipped by artisans, craftspeople, architects, engineers and workers of every skilled trade, who honour him as the patron of their tools and their craft. On Vishvakarma Puja devotees offer worship to their instruments, machines and workplaces, seeking his blessing for skill, prosperity and flawless workmanship. He is invoked whenever people create, build or design, that their making may be guided by the celestial architect himself.
