Mythological background
The Ashwini Kumaras are divine twin brothers - Nasatya and Dasra - known together as the Ashvinau, the 'horse-born princes'. They are the celestial physicians of the gods, holding the knowledge of medicine, rejuvenation, surgery, herbs, longevity and miraculous healing. In the Vedas they are among the most frequently praised deities: the Rigveda alone carries more than fifty hymns to their compassion, speed and timely rescues.
According to the Puranas their father is Surya, the Sun, and their mother is Sanjna (Saranyu). Unable to bear Surya's blazing brilliance, Sanjna took the form of a mare and withdrew; Surya followed as a stallion, and from that union the twins were born - which is why they are so closely tied to horses and to extraordinary speed.
Their names carry their nature. Nasatya is read as 'the saviour' or protector, the one who rescues from suffering, healing through compassion. Dasra means the wonder-worker, the accomplisher of extraordinary deeds, standing for transformation and miraculous recovery. Together they hold both the science and the miracle of healing.
